New Performance Group

The Hepcat Pre-performance team will be a feeder program for the Houston Hepcat Performance Team. It will work with individuals on basic through advanced skills, Houston Hepcat repertoire, and basic aerial skills and preps. The choreography that an individual will learn will be King Porter Stomp, Gangbusters, California and any other new simple routines that the director thinks would be suitable for the level of dancers. The basic aerial skills will be a frog jump, transfer jumps, around the worlds, and a prep for a lamppost. Choreography will be taught on a month by month basis, so for example King Porter might be taught the month of September and then not again for another four months. The exception to this might be if all of the dancers on a given day have learned the choreography and are ready to move on to the next piece.
Who: This team is designed for the dancer who does not want the full time commitment of the Hepcat Performance Team. Dancers should have a basic understanding of Lindy Hop and should have completed Lindy 1B. Dancers who are interested in participating are required to be full members of the Houston Swing Dance Society.
Where: Discover Gymnastics 747 N. Shepherd Dr. Houston, TX
When: Tuesdays from 8-9 pm

Member Profile: Troy Powell

I have grown up with a dedication and passion for athletics and sports. Growing up through college, I played about every team and contact sport known (football, soccer, hockey, rugby, etc.). In 1999, I decided to end a fourteen year triathlon career that had become the focal point of my life. After "drifting" for two years with no discernible interests, I had developed a lack of personal direction. It was actually a low point in my life until a friend convinced me to give "dance a chance". After months of prodding, I finally signed up for a month of lessons. Well, needless to say I was quickly hooked by the combination of mental and physical challenge, the great music, and wonderful people that I have gotten to know all over the country. I have now spent seven years working to improve my personal skills, but I have also tried to focus on the volunteer aspect to give back to the community what it has given to me. I find this to be as personally rewarding as learning the dance itself. My experience with HSDS and the dance community in general has been a life altering experience, and I only regret that I did not start many years sooner.

Houston Swing Dance Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit association. Houston Swing Dance Society is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through The Houston Arts Alliance.
