All HSDS classes are every Sunday at the Barbara King Dancing Centre. Click here to view our weekly class schedule. We offer lessons for beginner to advanced dancers. No partner necessary! Our weekly Sunday dance is 8:30-10:30pm following the lessons and is open to everyone!

Don't Miss This: Harvest Moon Ball September 25th

Harvest Moon Ball is fast approaching! Don't delay in purchasing your tickets for the September 25th Ball. Houston's Harvest Moon Ball is a celebration to honor the spirit of dedicated dancers in Houston! This evening is a collaboration of two dance groups, HSDS and the Rice Social Dance Society, and it's a night to wear your sharpest clothing and dance the night away! We'll be featuring great live music from Austin's hit swing band, Giant City Sextet, plus performances and the always entertaining dance-off competitions!

We're really excited to announce that Austin's favorite jazz band, Giant City Sextet will be playing for us all night at HMB!! Be sure to purchase your tickets early for the discounted price of $15.50 pre-sale. Tickets will be $20 cash only at the door. Click to purchase your tickets online until September 23rd. The beginner lesson will be provided at 7pm followed by dancing the night away 8pm-midnight.

Just who was Frankie Manning? Whether you're a longtime swing dancer or new to the dance floor, we hope you will enjoy and be inspired by this introduction to one of America's greatest dancers.

Congratulations to HSDS Competitors at ILHC

August 19th-21st in Alexandria, VA, the International Lindy Hop Championships treated everyone to the true spirit of Lindy Hop! With over 14 competition levels and representations from Sweden, France, Canada, UK and US the dancing was beyond incredible and the soul of the dance palpable! Houston represented by competing in many of the most popular events: Advanced and Open Jack and Jills, Strictly and Cabaret with several of them advancing on to the finals! The hit of the Saturday evening was the Cabaret division with 16 entries! HSDS's own Jerry Foote swept the competition as The Hip Hop Specialist and took home FIRST place!!! Congratulations to Jerry and all of our Houston dancers for giving it all you got at ILHC this weekend!

Also of note during the weekend was a unique Showcase performance form Andrew Thigpen and Karen Turman of the Evolution of Lindy Hop. With this and their wonderful spirit, they took home a new honor, The Heart and Soul of ILHC. This routine is one of a kind and chronicles the progression of the entire history of Lindy Hop fin three minutes from the Breakaway to the Gap Ad and our modern classics, like Minnie's Moochers, Silver Shadows and more! For a break down of Andrew and Karen's inspiration, I highly recommend catching up on these clips.

Swing Out of Town - Texas Edition!

We've got a lot going on in the great state of Texas over the next couple of months! It's time to take a road-trip and break out to see what's going on at these other great Texas events!

Hot Rhythm Holiday-September 17-19th, 2010 - Austin, TX. Hot Rhythm Holiday is an exclusive Balboa and Collegiate Shag weekend workshop featuring world-renowned instructors, hot live jazz and introducing the Texas Balboa and Collegiate Shag Championships. Come visit Austin to experience a one-of-a-kind event! We’re bringing the Bal and Shag communities together for one fun-filled, amazing weekend. Start your Holiday by joining us at the Hot Rhythm Ball, a classy evening with dinner, special performances, and dancing. Saturday and Sunday will have tracked-level classes during the day and contests at night. Even if you don’t compete, there will be plenty of social dancing with dancers from near and far—you won’t want to miss this event! Hot Rhythm Holiday 2010 Instructors: Nick Williams, Laura Keat, Mickey Fortanasce and Kelly Aresenault!

20th Annual Big Band Hangar Dance - Fort Worth, TX - Oct 2nd- The swing dance event of the year for the DFW ares is the 20th Annual Big Band Hangar Dance featuring the music of the 16-pc. Alan Glasscock Orchestra! All proceeds benefit the Vintage Flying Museum, home of "Chuckie," one of the last remaining B17-G Flying Fortress bombers. Dress is casual, but WW2 period dress and vintage uniforms encouraged. Advance tickets $30 or $35 at the door. BBQ dinner tickets available for $15 in advance only. Alamo Stomp - October 8-10th, 2010 - San Antonio. The San Antonio Swing Dance Society would like to invite you to their third weekend workshop, Alamo Stomp. The weekend features two days of classes from Kevin St. Laurent and Jo Hoffberg, Nathan Bugh and Austin's own Mike Roberts and Laura Glaess. There will also be three nights of dancing with a live band on Friday and Saturday. Pre-registration is only $85 for SASDS members and affiliates at www.saswing.org.

Austin Lindy Exchange - November 19th-21st 2010 - Austin, TX- If you have bumped into an Austinite, chances are, they can't shut up about how much they love their home scene. "There is so much diversity, the music is amazing, the dancers are inspiring, the atmostphere is great, everyone is friendly, there are so many fun things to do around town." Well, now is your chance to come and see for yourself what all the buzz is about! Visit Austin, TX for a roaring good time with fantastic music, venues, live shows, weather & dancers!

Ok, so it's not quite Texas, but it's still road-tripable and an amazing weekend: Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown-September 30th-October 4th - New Orleans, LA. The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown began nine years ago as a weekend centered around lindy hop competitions. No holds barred and improvisational, ULHS showcased dance contests like no other. Using no rules, boundary pushing contest formats, and focusing on the intrinsic relationship of jazz music and dance, The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown has become one of the most anticipated events in the international swing dance community. With its move to New Orleans in 2009, ULHS became more than a mere competition event. With more social dancing, more live music, historical lectures, dance classes, special guest performances, and a traditional New Orleans second line, the event has simply outgrown its name.

Learn Collegiate Shag in August

This elective will blast off your cardio-training for the month of August! The Collegiate Shag, taught by Holly and Cornelius, is a high energy swing dance from the 1930's and 40's. This dance is sure to get your blood pumping, but you'll be rewarded by all the fun you'll have learning it!! Every Sunday in August at 7:30pm.

Free 5th Sunday Lesso n and Dance August 29th

The dance (8:30-11pm) will be FREE and is preceded by a FREE Beginner's lesson at 7pm. No previous dance experience or partner is required. Just show up and come prepared to have a fun time. This month's contest is an advanced Jack-and-Jill contest (>1 year at Lindy 2 level) and will be limited to the first 8 couples who sign up. Fabulous mystery prizes await the winners!

Do you love HSDS? Now you can tell the world on your shirt! We'll be selling our HSDS and Lindyfest t-shirts to help show your HSDS love while you're out dancing around or out of town!

Annual Meeting August 29th

HSDS will hold its annual meeting on August 29th to inform all club members on the status of HSDS. We will briefly cover topics that affect all members as well as address questions from the group.

Take a Look Inside the Savoy Ballroom!

Have you ever wanted to experience what it was really like to dance inside the Savoy Ballroom, the birthplace of Lindy Hop? Check out this pre-release of a feature documentary on Swing-era drummer-bandleader Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald and Harlem's Savoy Ballroom, produced by Jeff Kaufman. This features Lindy Hop, Frankie Manning and Norma Miller and gives us all an insight into the "loose jointed women and boys made of India rubber" doing the Lindy Hop at the Savoy Ballroom.

Lindy Friday, August 13th

Lindy Friday is the perfect way to start your weekend with a swing, featuring some of Houston's favorite swing DJs, and brought to you by Alex and Samantha. Avoid bad luck by coming to Lindy Friday the 13th! Alex and Samantha want to thank to everyone who came out last time for the debut dance! It was such a success that this time there will be a bigger room and dancing will go an extra hour from 7 - 10 pm. Congratulations to Bobby Mckinney for winning a Houston Lindy Hop shirt in the raffle last month. This time the raffle prize is one not to miss: a one hour private lesson with Brian Eley and Anna Whitmire! So mark your calendars now! August 13th, 7-10pm. $5 at the door at Houston Dance Factory (5711 Hillcroft at Harwin).

New Hot Spot: Dancing at The Chocolate Bar with Buzz and the Blue Cats

We still find ourselves drawn every Thursday to the chocolate covered swing music at Houston's famous Chocolate Bar. The Rice Village Chocolate Bar (2521 University Blvd) has live jazz music EVERY Thursday evening 7-10 pm. The band is Buzz and The Blue Cats and they play ve ry swing danceable music. They are a very versatile band and respond well to requests; so don't be bashful. They loved having us dancers there! Please join us whether you want to dance or just listen and watch the dancers! Since this is a FREE event please be sure to patronize the Chocolate Bar and tip the band!

Save the Date: Harvest Moon Ball

Save the date!! Mark your calendars for Houston's Harvest Moon Ball a celebration to honor the spirit of dedicated dancers in Houston! This year's Harvest Moon Ball will be held September 25th, 2010. You'll be amazed at what you'll learn, plus you can keep the Houston scene energized with your new steps!

Lindy on the Rocks - August 6-8th, 2010 - Denver, CO - A nice mix of Lindy Hop dances, workshops and competitions.

ILHC - International Lindy Hop Championships - August 19th-22nd - Washington D.C. - This year promises to deliver an international competition weekend that provides fantastic competitions organized, performed and judged at the highest levels possible and inclusive of all nations wishing to participate.

Swing Out New Hampshire - September 1st-6th, 2010 - Hebron, N.H. - At SONH we bring together many of the best dance teachers in the world and hundreds of friendly, enthusiastic dancers, for a total immersion experience at Camp Wicosuta. It's a real kids' summer camp in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, surrounded by trees and hills, with both a pristine mountain lake and an outdoor swimming pool. We learn, dance, eat, sing and play together, with four full days of classes and five nights of dancing.

Dawn Hampton Short Film Screening at Aurora Picture Show June 25th

We just got word that Julie Cohen's film submission on Dawn Hampton was accepted to the Aurora Picture Show's Extremely Shorts Film Festival and will be airing at the festival this Friday, June 25th. Please help us get the word out to support this film.

I don't have much information about this short film about Dawn, but Julie is the same director that brought us the documentary on Frankie, Frankie Manning: Never Stop Swinging, so we shouldn't be disappointed!

Tradition dictates that lace is the traditional gift for a thirteenth anniversary, so we are gonna pass on any gifts you might want to bring (or wear) and ask you to bring your pint glass instead. Aurora’s most popular annual event returns with the 13th installment of juried short shorts submitted from around the globe. Juror Donald Harrison from Ann Arbor Film Festival will be in attendance to introduce his selection and announce the winners. Enjoy karaoke and good food by moonlight on the final night of the festival.

Head over to HOB Friday night after you visit Aurora Picture Show to see the Dawn Hampton film. The House of Blues presents Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Since their arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at Los Angeles' Brown Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach has proven them over time to be the singular standout among the numerous bands that launched the Nineties swing revival.

New Dance - Lindy Friday - July 9th

Introducing Lindy Friday, Houston's newest monthly swing dance event. Organizers, and all around Lindy Hop enthusiasts, Alex and Samantha, have put together a perfect way to start your weekend off right! The inaugural dance is Friday, July 9th, 7-9pm at the Houston Dance Factory and is only $5. Let's show them some support and maybe this will turn into a weekly event! DJ Summit July 17th

Are you DJing and would like to improve your skills? Have you ever thought you might like to DJ?   Organized by Houston DJ, Kristina Arscott, this is a rare opportunity to learn from several of our most experienced DJs, as well as the whole of the DJ community itself.   This event will be open to local DJs who like swing, blues and fusion music. The goal is to increase DJ skills and create a space for all swing/blues/fusion DJs to get to know each other.   The day will offer tips and advice on topics including: 

Know your equipment and how to pack your "DJ Bag"
How to build a great set for a particular gig...for the dancers, the hosts and you! 
Building and organizing your music collection 
Making your set flow 
How to "read a room"
 Resources you can use to become a better DJ

All active DJs of any flavor of swing or organization affiliation are invited and encouraged to attend. Aspiring DJs and interested dancers are also very welcome�new faces are welcome!

HSDS Happenings

Hellzapoppin', Then and Now

In May 2009 what would have been Frankie Manning's 95th Birthday was celebrated in NYC by thousands of lindy hoppers from all reaches of the world. HSDS was a proud organizer for this huge undertaking. The crowning event to the festivities was a full theatrical show of Frankie's life, culminating in a recreation of one of the most spectacular lindy hop routines caught on film, Hellzapoppin' (1941) with Frankie Manning as lead choreographer. Several highly acclaimed dancers recreated this routine as a special gift to Frankie. We know in our hearts he was swinging out with us on that night! HSDS and Brian Grady are proud to release the footage from this routine.

Andrew and Karen Workshop - June 11-13th

The Dallas Swing Dance Society is having a two-day workshop with instructors Andrew Thigpen & Karen Turman June 11th - 13^th!!! DSDS is offering a full weekend of dancing and fun for all! Online registration is open.

Who are Andrew and Karen? Karen Turman was first seen on stage at age 9 performing a tap dance to "Lollipop" in a striped leotard and has been dancing ever since (in fact, she can still be seen dancing around in a leotard from time to time). She discovered Lindy Hop during the swing craze in 1998 and has never looked back. Karen originally honed her dance skills in Minneapolis, MN and now currently resides in Santa Barbara, CA.

Andrew Thigpen was first exposed to the Lindy Hop back in 1998 but didnt actually develop rhythm until booty dancing in college. Since 2005 Andrew has developed a uniquely energetic style of swing dancing with a focus on fun and learning things right the first time. His only hope is to share his love of the dance and the energy it brings forth with as many people as possible. Andrew and Karen are basically the same person except Karen likes unicorns and rainbows while Andrew likes dragons and beer. All they want to do is dance the Lindy Hop and make each other laugh. Having fun is awesome. They hope you like awesome too.

Tribute to Frankie Manning with Chazz Young-June 18th

City2City and the Dallas Swing Dance Society present a Tribute to Frankie Manning with Chazz Young on June 18th. Come out for a dance and meet & greet with Chazz Young, son of the legendary Frankie Manning. Cost for the event is $7 in advance/$10 at the door. Food will be provided along with prize giveaways. We get a lot of questions about how people can become a better dancer and while regular classes will be around to provide you with fundamentals, we can't stress enough how much one can learn from breaking outside your comfort zone and visiting another city's dance event! Swing Out New Hampshire - September 1st-6th, 2010 - Hebron, N.H. - At SONH we bring together many of the best dance teachers in the world and hundreds of friendly, enthusiastic dancers, for a total immersion experience at Camp Wicosuta. It's a real kids' summer camp in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, surrounded by trees and hills, with both a pristine mountain lake and an outdoor swimming pool. We learn, dance, eat, sing and play together, with four full days of classes and five nights of dancing.

Hot Rhythm Holiday-September 17-19th, 2010 - Austin, TX. Hot Rhythm Holiday is an exclusive Balboa and Collegiate Shag weekend workshop featuring world-renowned instructors, hot live jazz and introducing the Texas Balboa and Collegiate Shag Championships. Hepcats Auditions

The Houston Hepcats, HSDS's performance team, will be holding OPEN AUDITIONS on Sunday, April 25th at 5:30. Come prepared to learn and perform a bit of choreography. Bring your best swing-out as we will be focused on a good, clean swing-out to various tempos. As always, to participate in any of HSDS's teams, please make sure your membership dues are up to date BEFORE you try-out.

We're Open Easter Sunday!!

Yes! HSDS is always ready to swing!! We'll be open and having classes and the dance on Easter Sunday, April 4th. Look at it this way, it's a great way to work off all those Peeps and chocolate bunnies you've been snacking on all day! Don't be shy with the family, bring them along too and show them what you've been up to Sunday nights!! The more the merrier!! Hippity Hop!!

Lindyfest - It's a Wrap!

Thanks to all the wonderful people for coming out to Lindyfest and making this a great weekend! Larry and I really enjoy putting this event on year after year and all the hard work pays off when we see everyone smiling and having a good time at Lindyfest. Of course, we couldn't do this without all of our wonderful volunteers who make this event a joy to run!! Not to mention our crew of instructors, DJs and performers are not just fantastic at what the do, but amazing people to share the weekend with!

HSDS Happenings

Free 5th Sunday Lesson and Dance

Bring your friends and family and join us the last Sunday of the month, January 31st, for our FREE 5th Sunday Lesson and Dance! Intro to Swing will be taught 7-8pm and the dance will follow 8-10:30pm. Don't forget that we're at our new location at the Barbara King Dance Center, 5410 Bellaire Blvd!

HSDS has Moved!

It's a new year and a new HOME for HSDS! The Houston Swing Dance Society has MOVED! HSDS has relocated all of our Sunday night dances and classes to the NEW Barbara King Dance Studio (5410 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, TX 77401) effective January 3rd, 2010.

Besides moving to a wonderful new dance studio, nothing else will change; rates, class times, teachers and dances will all remain the same!! We hope you'll join us on our journey!

HSDS Board Elections-Now Taking Nominations

HSDS is taking nominations for our Board of Directors. This group of seven elected members is responsible for bringing you great events like our annual workshop Lindyfest, weekend workshops, Harvest Moon Ball, as well as shaping our regular classes and dances.

The Houston Swing Dance Society is an organization of dedicated individuals who have a common appreciation and love of swing dancing and the Swing Dance Era. We are proud to be a part of the local arts community that makes Houston a richer place to live and visit.

Since its inception HSDS has been governed by a board of directors whose members are actively involved in all aspects of the organization. All day-to-day operations of HSDS are under the supervision of a seven member Board of Directors who have been elected in the past two years.

If you are a current HSDS member who would like to contribute to the future of HSDS please contact us to be added to the ballot. There are four open Board Member seats that we are looking to fill this year! Once enough nominations are received elections should be held late February/early March!

Beginner's Lindy Hop Crash Course

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest week end. Beginner's lessons are March 13-14th.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction from Jason and Chansin Esparza at the Sheraton Hotel.

February Elective is Shim Sham

HSDS Founder, Rowena Young, will teach everyone the popular lindy hop line dance, the Shim Sham. This dance was popularized by the late Frankie Manning and incorporates jazz and tap techniques including the Shorty George, Tacky Annie and Boogie Back! Come join the party and learn this fun lindy hop line dance. Sunday's at 7:30 pm.

Lindyfest March 11-14th, 2010

As always, HSDS is proud to present our 2010 Lindyfest instructors: Dawn Hampton, Chazz Young, Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Virginie Jensen, Steven Mitchell, Skye Humphries, Frida Segerdahl, Max Pitruzzella, Annie Trudeau, Peter Strom, Ramona Staffeld, Naomi Uyama, Todd Yannacone Nina Gilkenson, Andy Reid, Kevin St Laurent and Jo Hoffberg!

Full Weekend Workshop Package

The Great Southwest Lindyfest is a weekend workshop that brings extraordinary swing dance instructors into the area to teach Lindy Hop and related dances. This workshop is designed for Lindy Hop dancers at the Beginner-Intermediate level and above. If you are brand new to swing dancing or Lindy Hop, we recommend you take the 2-day Beginner's Track or weekly lessons provided by the Houston Swing Dance Society.

$159 January 16th-March 5th, 2010

$170 at the door March 11th-14th, 2010

$120 International rate / Junior rate-18 and under (ID required) through March 5th, 2010

Since its inception HSDS has been governed by a board of directors whose members are actively involved in all aspects of the organization. All day-to-day operations of HSDS are under the supervision of a seven member Board of Directors who have been elected in the past two years. <br />

HSDS Jack and Jill Funtest January 3rd

HSDS is having a Jack and Jill contest on the January 3rd, 2010 at our NEW location! Jack and Jill contests are fun way of pairing up dancers on the spot and comparing social dancing skills. Leads and follows are paired randomly and judged based on their ability to dance, have fun and entertain. All levels are welcome.

The best lead and best follow each win $10 and one free month of class at HSDS. Second place leads and follows each receive one free month of classes at HSDS as well.

HSDS is Moving!

It's a new year and a new HOME for HSDS! The Houston Swing Dance Society is MOVING in 2010! HSDS is relocating all of our Sunday night dances and classes to the NEW Barbara King Dance Studio (5410 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, TX 77401) effective January 3rd, 2010.

Besides moving to a wonderful new dance studio, nothing else will change; rates, class times, teachers and dances will all remain the same!!

In the next few weeks we'll be sending out plenty of reminders, but we don't have everyone's email. Please, help us out by letting all your friends know about our big move. We hope you'll join us on our journey!

January Elective is Balboa

Then January elective is Beginning Balboa. As always, the elective starts at 7:30pm on the first Sunday of the month! If you're a member, this class is included in your monthly dues!

Lindyfest Registration is Now Open!

Lindyfest is just around the corner...March 11-14th 2010 and registration is now officially open! Lindyfest is an intensive and fun lindy hop weekend workshop jammed packed with classes for all dance levels, soul sessions with living legends, hot performances and four endless nights of dancing. Lindyfest brings in hundreds of dancers from all across the globe to learn lindy hop from the masters and experience the excitement of Lindy Hop, all here in Houston.

They have well over 20 hours of social dancing planned and all of the competitions are social dance competitions - Jack and Jills and Strictlys. The judges don't want to see routines or a bunch of planned stuff... so no stress on your part, no need to prepare a routine, just come enjoy the weekend.

Free 5th Sunday Dance and Lesson!

Work off your extra Turkey-Day calories with us on Sunday, November 29th with a FREE beginner's lesson at 7pm and a FREE dance 8-10pm!

We'll also be celebrating the season with a Toy Drive to sponsor the kids at HealthBridge Children's Hospital. HealthBridge cares for children from ages 0 � 21. Many of these patients have a 1 to 2 month stay (sometimes in isolation) and get bored very easily, especially the teenagers. The Child Life Department works to provide the children games, book, movies & etc. to keep them occupied during their stay. Unfortunately, they only have so many movies and so many books and so many video games to go around.

December Elective

The December elective is "Lindy Hop for Competitions" and will be taught by our own Tena Morales as well as other Texas dancers who've proven themselves successful in competitions over the years. This class is to prepare you for the upcoming social dance competition, Lone Star Championships. As always, electives are taught every Sunday at 7:30pm! See you there!!

So come out in your best vintage 1940's style outfits and join us for an amazing night of dancing!

Houston Zoo's Feast with the Beasts and BBVD

The Houston Zoo is having its annual adult-only social, Feast with the Beasts, November 6th, 2009. Feasts with the Beasts is a strolling, dining, drinking and dancing event featuring 50 top restaurants, beer and wine, and this year � music from Big Bad Voodoo Daddys.

Ria Debiase Workshop November 7th

Ria DeBiase Workshop is Saturday, November 7th from 11am-3pm at Barbara King Dance Studio. Registration (Now open!) is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Ria is a wonderful dancer and recently competed and placed at the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown's Jack-and-Jill contest! She combines combines athleticism and grace to be a national favorite! Guys, don't miss out, she won't just be teaching to the ladies. You won't be disappointed. Privates are available!

Celebrate Day of the Dead at HSDS November 1st

We have a long tradition of hosting a costume party on our regular Sunday around Halloween. This year we'll be celebrating Day of the Dead or El Día de los Muertos this year on Sunday, November 1st. Come dressed in your scariest, silliest, craziest costume and dance the night away. We'll have a contest where you can win fabulous prizes!

The latest word from Old School Swing: Everyone's invited to "Swing on by" our next big public performance at the outdoor stage at Discovery Green park in downtown Houston. We will be playing lively original and classic swing tunes in the attempt to have the most fun possible!

The area in front of the stage will be reserved for dancing and the call goes out to all swing dancers to attend this magnificent reunion.

We will have featured guests, including April Wheat on vocals, and Susana Collins of Lunatango Dance Productions on hand to show us how quality
dancing is done. There will be other special guest dancers as well so look out, dancers will be spotted!

October Elective is Swing Rueda!

The October elective is Swing Rueda! Come out and learn what this fun group dance is all about! Borrowed from the Salsa Rueda, the Swing Rueda is danced in a circle with two or more couples. There is a dancer who calls the moves which the entire circle executes in unison. Some moves require partner changes and that's when the fun begins. You'll learn cool moves like the sushi roll, dame, and the circle down.

As always, class starts on the first Sunday in October at 7:30pm! See you there!!

Harvest Moon Ball was a great success with hundreds of happy dancers enjoying the sounds of Old School Swing Band! Though Ben and Sheri have won numerous competition awards, they are most proud of their 2005 National Jitterbug Championship "Golden Budgie" Award given annually to the person or people best exhibiting the true spirit of Jitterbug. Ben and Sheri are the directors of one of the most unique dance teams around, One2Swing's Jitterbugs and The California Rolls.

The One2Swing Jitterbugs a nd The California Rolls are a swing dance team committed to spreading the joy of Lindy Hop and swing dancing whenever and wherever they can. Based in Los Angeles, California, and directed by international dance champions and instructors Ben and Sheri Yau, the One2Swing Jitterbugs are all about entertaining, inspiring, and having fun!

We've heard your calls for wanting to be able to renew your membership and classes online or with a credit card. The day has finally come!! Board Member Larry Castro has been busy creating a custom application for you to 1) renew your HSDS membership 2) print your new membership card 3) pay for your classes by the month up to 1 year and 4) take advantage of member-only discounts to workshops, like Ben and Sheri and other HSDS sponsored events!

If you gave your email contact when you became a member, you were sent an email instructing you on how to log in and manage your HSDS account. We're very excited about this new advancement and we hope you are too!

The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown has changed many times over the last 7 years. This year is no exception. ULHS is no longer an event celebrating one style of dance (lindy hop) in one way (contests). It is now a festival celebrating our diverse dance community, its history, and the music that inspires us.

New Orleans sets the scene for a soul stirring weekend of continuous live jazz and blues, exhilarating dance contests with the world's best, non stop social dancing, dance classes for all levels, and historical presentations on the symbiotic relationship between jazz musicians and jazz dancers. There's even going to be a musicians vs dancers baseball game and BBQ!

Lonestar Championships
January 15-17th, 2010, Austin, Texas

Lone Star Championships is a social / party event. While they have multiple workshops and competitions, Lone Star is first a party weekend. There are over 20 hours of social dancing and all of the competitions are social dance competitions - Jack and Jills and Strictlys only. They believe that competitions bring us together to push and inspire each other, as well as bring us together to support and cheer for each other.
