HSDS Happenings

All HSDS classes are every Sunday at the new Barbara King Dance Studio. Click here to view our weekly class schedule. We offer lessons for beginner to advanced dancers. No partner necessary! Our weekly Sunday dance is 8:30-10:30pm following the lessons and is open to everyone!

Free 5th Sunday Lesson and Dance

Bring your friends and family and join us the last Sunday of the month, January 31st, for our FREE 5th Sunday Lesson and Dance! Intro to Swing will be taught 7-8pm and the dance will follow 8-10:30pm. Don't forget that we're at our new location at the Barbara King Dance Center, 5410 Bellaire Blvd!

HSDS has Moved!

It's a new year and a new HOME for HSDS! The Houston Swing Dance Society has MOVED! HSDS has relocated all of our Sunday night dances and classes to the NEW Barbara King Dance Studio (5410 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, TX 77401) effective January 3rd, 2010.

Besides moving to a wonderful new dance studio, nothing else will change; rates, class times, teachers and dances will all remain the same!! We hope you'll join us on our journey!

HSDS Board Elections-Now Taking Nominations

HSDS is taking nominations for our Board of Directors. This group of seven elected members is responsible for bringing you great events like our annual workshop Lindyfest, weekend workshops, Harvest Moon Ball, as well as shaping our regular classes and dances.

The Houston Swing Dance Society is an organization of dedicated individuals who have a common appreciation and love of swing dancing and the Swing Dance Era. We are proud to be a part of the local arts community that makes Houston a richer place to live and visit.

Since its inception HSDS has been governed by a board of directors whose members are actively involved in all aspects of the organization. All day-to-day operations of HSDS are under the supervision of a seven member Board of Directors who have been elected in the past two years.

If you are a current HSDS member who would like to contribute to the future of HSDS please contact us to be added to the ballot. There are four open Board Member seats that we are looking to fill this year! Once enough nominations are received elections should be held late February/early March!

Beginner's Lindy Hop Crash Course

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest week end. Beginner's lessons are March 13-14th.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction from Jason and Chansin Esparza at the Sheraton Hotel.

February Elective is Shim Sham

HSDS Founder, Rowena Young, will teach everyone the popular lindy hop line dance, the Shim Sham. This dance was popularized by the late Frankie Manning and incorporates jazz and tap techniques including the Shorty George, Tacky Annie and Boogie Back! Come join the party and learn this fun lindy hop line dance. Sunday's at 7:30 pm.

Lindyfest March 11-14th, 2010

As always, HSDS is proud to present our 2010 Lindyfest instructors: Dawn Hampton, Chazz Young, Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Virginie Jensen, Steven Mitchell, Skye Humphries, Frida Segerdahl, Max Pitruzzella, Annie Trudeau, Peter Strom, Ramona Staffeld, Naomi Uyama, Todd Yannacone Nina Gilkenson, Andy Reid, Kevin St Laurent and Jo Hoffberg!

Full Weekend Workshop Package

The Great Southwest Lindyfest is a weekend workshop that brings extraordinary swing dance instructors into the area to teach Lindy Hop and related dances. This workshop is designed for Lindy Hop dancers at the Beginner-Intermediate level and above. If you are brand new to swing dancing or Lindy Hop, we recommend you take the 2-day Beginner's Track or weekly lessons provided by the Houston Swing Dance Society.

Workshop Pricing
$159 January 16th-March 5th, 2010

$170 at the door March 11th-14th, 2010

$120 International rate / Junior rate-18 and under (ID required) through March 5th, 2010

All workshop prices include all workshops and dances Thursday through Sunday

HSDS Jack and Jill Funtest January 3rd

HSDS is having a Jack and Jill contest on the January 3rd, 2010 at our NEW location! Jack and Jill contests are fun way of pairing up dancers on the spot and comparing social dancing skills. Leads and follows are paired randomly and judged based on their ability to dance, have fun and entertain. All levels are welcome.

The best lead and best follow each win $10 and one free month of class at HSDS. Second place leads and follows each receive one free month of classes at HSDS as well.

HSDS is Moving!

January Elective is Balboa

Then January elective is Beginning Balboa. As always, the elective starts at 7:30pm on the first Sunday of the month! If you're a member, this class is included in your monthly dues!

Lindyfest Registration is Now Open!

Lindyfest is just around the corner...March 11-14th 2010 and registration is now officially open! Lindyfest is an intensive and fun lindy hop weekend workshop jammed packed with classes for all dance levels, soul sessions with living legends, hot performances and four endless nights of dancing. Lindyfest brings in hundreds of dancers from all across the globe to learn lindy hop from the masters and experience the excitement of Lindy Hop, all here in Houston.

Lonestar Championships is January 15-17!

Get ready for the Lone Star Championships, January 15th-17th, 2010, an unbeatable social/party/competition event weekend in Austin, TX. Lone Star is a high quality event where social dancing all night, inspired competitions and amazing workshops are the norm! They have well over 20 hours of social dancing planned and all of the competitions are social dance competitions - Jack and Jills and Strictlys. The judges don't want to see routines or a bunch of planned stuff... so no stress on your part, no need to prepare a routine, just come enjoy the weekend.

Don't miss out on the fantastic line-up with workshops by Nina Gilkenson, Carla Heiney, Laura Glaess, Nick Williams, Todd Yannacone, Mike Faltesek, and Mikey Pedroza.

Lone Star supports the idea that competitions bring us together to push and inspire each other to grow as dancers and as a community, with a healthy dose of support and cheer for each other. Lone Star has created a space for all Lindy Hoppers to perform and compete with like-leveled dancers - from newcomers who have never competed, all the way up to the top competitors in the country. That's why at Lone Star this year they'll have 4 levels of Jack and Jills: Newcomer, Intermediate, Advanced, and All-Star.

We'll also be celebrating the season with a Toy Drive to sponsor the kids at HealthBridge Children's Hospital. HealthBridge cares for children from ages 0 � 21. Many of these patients have a 1 to 2 month stay (sometimes in isolation) and get bored very easily, especially the teenagers. The Child Life Department works to provide the children games, book, movies & etc. to keep them occupied during their stay. Unfortunately, they only have so many movies and so many books and so many video games to go around.

December Elective

The December elective is "Lindy Hop for Competitions" and will be taught by our own Tena Morales as well as other Texas dancers who've proven themselves successful in competitions over the years. This class is to prepare you for the upcoming social dance competition, Lone Star Championships. As always, electives are taught every Sunday at 7:30pm! See you there!!

That's why at Lone Star this year they'll have 4 levels of Jack and Jills: Newcomer, Intermediate, Advanced, and All-Star.

Ria Debiase Workshop November 7th

Ria DeBiase Workshop is Saturday, November 7th from 11am-3pm at Barbara King Dance Studio. Registration (Now open!) is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Ria is a wonderful dancer and recently competed and placed at the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown's Jack-and-Jill contest! She combines combines athleticism and grace to be a national favorite! Celebrate Day of the Dead at HSDS November 1st

We have a long tradition of hosting a costume party on our regular Sunday around Halloween. This year we'll be celebrating Day of the Dead or El Día de los Muertos this year on Sunday, November 1st. Come dressed in your scariest, silliest, craziest costume and dance the night away. We'll have a contest where you can win fabulous prizes!

The area in front of the stage will be reserved for dancing and the call goes out to all swing dancers to attend this magnificent reunion.

We will have featured guests, including April Wheat on vocals, and Susana Collins of Lunatango Dance Productions on hand to show us how quality
dancing is done. There will be other special guest dancers as well so look out, dancers will be spotted!

October Elective is Swing Rueda!

The October elective is Swing Rueda! Come out and learn what this fun group dance is all about! Borrowed from the Salsa Rueda, the Swing Rueda is danced in a circle with two or more couples. There is a dancer who calls the moves which the entire circle executes in unison. Some moves require partner changes and that's when the fun begins. You'll learn cool moves like the sushi roll, dame, and the circle down.

As always, class starts on the first Sunday in October at 7:30pm! See you there!!

HSDS is pleased to bring you a new season of weekend workshops, kicking off with the fun and charming Ben and Sheri Yau on Saturday, October 3 rd, 2009. By the way, don't miss the videos below of their TWO National Jitterbug Championship award winning routines!

About Ben and Sheri: Since meeting in 1999, Ben and Sheri Yau from Pasadena, CA have instructed, judged, competed and danced around the world. Ben and Sheri are especially known for their innovative and musical dancing and choreography. Though Ben and Sheri have won numerous competition awards, they are most proud of their 2005 National Jitterbug Championship "Golden Budgie" Award given annually to the person or people best exhibiting the true spirit of Jitterbug. Ben and Sheri are the directors of one of the most unique dance teams around, One2Swing's Jitterbugs and The California Rolls.

The One2Swing Jitterbugs a nd The California Rolls are a swing dance team committed to spreading the joy of Lindy Hop and swing dancing whenever and wherever they can. This year's Harvest Moon Ball will be held September 26th, 2009. Houston's Harvest Moon Ball was created to honor the spirit of dedicated dance rs, friendly competition and collaboration by bringing two dance groups together, HSDS and the Rice Social Dance Society.

New Price Structure at HSDS Begins October 1st

HSDS is rolling out a new price-structure beginning October 1st, 2009.

HSDS is a non-profit association dedicated to the preservation of Lindy Hop. By renewing or staring your new HSDS membership you help to support our cause. Your membership dues go towards supporting one of the longest running and highly regarded Lindy Hop workshop, Lindyfest, held every year in March. You dues not only help bring you weekly classes and dances but also support our performance and outreach teams, archival projects and more! We strive to give Houston top-notch Lindy Hop instruction and dances to insure that everyone may have a chance to learn about the joy of this dance! Please consider supporting HSDS by maintaining your membership or joining for the first time.

Member Profile

From time to time we like to profile our HSDS dancers. Everyone has such a unique story on how they found dance. Samantha and Alex have been lindy hopping a little less than a year and have definitely been bitten by the dance bug.

Samantha and I first encountered lindy hop at Saute Bistro in December. We were there to see The Old School Swing Band and were surprised and delighted to see the dancers that had come out to enjoy the music as well. We were completely blown away by the energy and obvious joy on the faces of the dancers. When the band was finished playing I approached one of the dancers and asked how he got started. He told me about HSDS, the website, and the classes. We went for the first time the very next month.

We had a blast. It's not surprising that we enjoyed it, but I confess that I was more than a little nervous in the month leading up to our first class. I'd had a brief introduction to swing in a class by Holly and Cornelius years ago at Numbers, but they only covered six count and I didn't do very well. I've spent most of my life terrified by dance and most things musical. While I'm no stranger to physical activity, my dancing has until recently been limited to biting my lower lip and shuffling from foot to foot.

Samantha, on the other hand, has spent most of her life dancing. She started ballet when she was three and has stayed involved with dance and other arts ever since, recently adding belly dance to her repertoire. She works at the Glassell Junior School of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston registering children for classes and giving tours of the exhibits. So it's no surprise that Samantha has done very well in Lindy, both as a follow and, more recently, as a lead.

Our biggest Lindy breakthrough came during Lindyfest. We danced more than we ever had, and rather than getting tired of it, we seemed to become possessed. We tried to dance every single night in the weeks following Lindyfest, and though the initial fire has necessarily calmed a bit, we still dance as often as we possibly can. In October, just ten months after we started, we'll be attending our first out-of-state event, ULHS, and can't wait!

August Elective is the Big Apple

The Big Apple is a fun group dance that has several variations. The Big Apple was a dance sensation in the late 1930s and while out on tour, Frankie Manning choreographed his own version of the popular da nce craze. You'll learn this variation with moves like Truckin, the Suzie-Q and Boogie-backs! Take a look at the classic film, Keep Punchin', for all the fun in store for you!

Electives are taught at 7:30pm every Sunday! Don't miss out on this one!

August 5th Sunday Dance will benefit the Houston Food Bank

HSDS will be hosting our 5th Sunday party on August 30th. HSDS has a long history of giving back to the community and supports the Houston Food Bank with yearly food drives. This 5th Sunday, the entrance fee is two non-perishable canned goods or a $5 suggested donation to the Houston Food Bank. 100% of donations will go directly to the Houston Food Bank. The Houston Food Bank is a private, nonprofit organization serving the Greater Houston area, for more information, please go to Houston Food Bank

Frankie Manning 95th Birthday Group Photo

Let's make sure to send a great birthday greeting to Frankie Manning, a lindy hop legend!
The Frankie 95 event is looking for people to send in birthday greetings for a photo birthday card to be presented to Frankie. Here's what the site is asking for: "Individuals and groups are encouraged during Frankie Week from March 12-22 to create a photo "birthday card" for Frankie. Take a photo of you or your group wishing Frankie Happy Birthday. Be as creative as you can about the location, costumes, signage, etc. For example, you can take a picture of your whole scene holding a sign that says "Happy Birthday Frankie from Your Fans in ______"; you can have a bunch of dancers spell out "95" and take an overhead shot of that; you can have a bunch of people shave their heads in tribute to Frankie; or wear Hellzapoppin-style baker's hats. The possibilities are endless!"

We've set up a group photo shoot for this project and we'd like to see as many of you there as possible!!

Lindyfest Thanks and Wrap-up Survey!

Thanks to all the wonderful people for coming out to Lindyfest and making this a great weekend! We really enjoy putting this event on year after year and all the hard work pays off when we see everyone smiling and having a good time at Lindyfest. As you may know, lindy hop legend Frankie Manning will be turning 95 years old next May! To celebrate we are organizing the biggest and most spectacular birthday for him yet!

From May 21st -May 26th, 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend) lindy hoppers, jazz musicians, tap dancers, friends and supporters from all over the world will descend upon New York City for six days of dancing, live music, workshops, discussions, tours, competitions, performances, and much more. This will undoubtedly be the largest and most significant Lindy gathering of our time and an event you will not want to miss!

More details will be announced over the coming weeks and months at Frankie's 95th Birthday Festival but in the meantime, mark your calendars, start spreading the word, and stay tuned!

Advanced Try-outs

During registration, if you selected the "advanced" level, you will be asked to try-out for this track at the workshop. Try-outs will consist of ~5-7 minutes of dancing with at least two different partners using a traditional Jack-and-Jill format.

Some pointers about try-outs. Most judges look for good, clean basics, rhythm, and dancing with the music. Judges are not necessairly looking for "tricks" or flashy moves, and these may hurt your chances if they are not successfully attempted, e.g. out of time or character of the musc, or results in your basic foot-work to fall apart.

Try-out times:
Thursday: 9pm at Sheraton Brookhollow
Friday: 11am at JCC
Saturday: 1pm at JCC

Beginner's Track

Do you know someone who's eager to learn lindy hop but just can't commit to going to weekly classes? We are offering a special Beginner's Track crash course for people looking to start their journey into Lindy Hop during the Lindyfest weekend.

We start from the very beginning and teach you how to put the triple in your step. You'll also be treated to special visits from Frankie Manning and Dawn Hampton, both inspirational legends of the dance. Registration is only $55 and includes 8 hours of instruction with Jason Esparza and Chansin Bird at the Sheraton Hotel.

Dance Pass

Dance passes are now available online! Dance passes will also be sold at the door. The dance pass price is $75 for the entire weekend Thursday-Sunday. Below are the individual dance prices.

$10-Thursday 9pm-3am
$30-Friday 9pm-5am
$35-Saturday 9pm-5am
$10-Sunday 8:00pm-3am

Dances are included in the price of the workshop. If you registered for the full weekend you do not need to purchase a dance pass.

Breakfast is Served!

Don't forget the buffet! We will be selling tickets for the evening breakfast spread for Friday and Saturday night for only $10. The food will be rolling out from midnight to 2am.

No HSDS Classes on Sunday March 15th

Sunday March 15th our regular HSDS classes are suspended and the dance will be held in conjunction with Lindyfest at the Sheraton Brookhollow. HSDS members who paid for the Month of March get into the Sunday night for FREE!

Lindyfest is an amazing lindy hop weekend workshop jammed packed with classes for all dance levels, soul sessions with living legends, hot performances and four endless nights of dancing. Lindyfest brings in hundreds of dancers from all across the globe to learn lindy hop from the masters and experience the excitement of Lindy Hop, all here in Houston.

Member Profile

This month's profile features Mickey Pumphrey. Affectionately known as Mr. Ballroom, you can catch Mickey at almost all the dance events around town.

HSDS: What got you interested in dancing?
MP: A very good friend from high school whom many of you know as Ben "The Shimmy King" Goins dragged me into dancing as he did with many things back in those days.

HSDS: What kinds of dancing do you do?
MP: I performed and competed in Ballroom during college going on to dance and teach it professionally for awhile. As far as social dancing goes, I mainly do Swing/Fusion.

HSDS: What brought you to Lindy Hop?
MP: I enjoy the sense of community in the Swing scene, people tend to be very friendly.

HSDS: How different is Lindy in comparison to Ballroom dancing?
MP: The main difference is with Ballroom you move about, sweeping around the dance floor like you see in those old movies, whereas with Lindy it is more danced in place.

HSDS: Of all the dances you know and have mastered, what's your favorite type of partner dance?
MP: I don't have a favorite, but my personal style is a fusion drawing mainly from West Coast Swing, Smooth Ballroom, and Blues.

HSDS: Does music have anything to do w/ the dancing?
MP: The right song can definitely make the dance. I feel that musicality, including the rhythm, melody, and mood, is essential to the dancing experience. I enjoy dancing Swing to a wide variety of music.

HSDS: Other than dance, what else do you like to do for fun?
MP: I enjoy working on my artwork, going to museums/galleries, watching films, playing lawn games, and sailing.

HSDS: Any additional comments you'd like to add?
MP: I just want to encourage all the beginning dancers out there to keep it up and most importantly have fun. With time and practice you will accomplish your goals for learning how to dance whatever they may be. Oh and feel free to come ask me to dance, I'm more than happy to.

This is Texas's newest event started by our own Tena Morales along with Don and Scott from Dallas and Austin. This event is for everyone whether you are a beginner or advanced, a seasoned competitor or just starting out, or you just want to dance. At $79 this will be a great chance to dance and make friends with people from all over the country and see some great competitions. If you have not competed and are interested this is a great place to get your start.

San Antonio is a growing scene and this is their second annual workshop. This one will have Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Bill Borgida, Lenore Saltz, Matt Jones, Laura Malloy teaching the workshops. This is lining up to be a great event and at $65 (before Jan 19th for HSDS members) this is a good deal.
